The Divine Light is one, yet it expresses itself in countless forms. This line from Gurbani becomes the spiritual heartbeat of Sikh philosophy and the foundation of Chardi Kala, the ever-rising spirit, the fearless consciousness, and the strength to stand tall in Hukam. On a quiet Sunday morning, when the world feels slower and more receptive, this line feels like sunlight touching the soul. It reminds us that the same energy that glows in the stars, moves in the wind, and warms the earth also breathes within us. When the heart recognises that this One Light pervades all, divisions soften, fears loosen their grip, and the mind begins to rise. Earth also.
The giver of joy and sorrow is One.
Gurbani does not ask us to deny the reality of hardship; it asks us to see the Light even within it. This is where Chardi Kala begins: not in the absence of struggle, but in the decision to rise above struggle. The person touched by this awareness does not escape life; they engage with it through courage, grace, and spiritual clarity.
The One Light That Removes Fear
When the mind recognizes Oneness, fear finds no place to stand. Worry dissolves when life stops feeling like a battlefield of separate forces and starts feeling like a single divine movement. Gurbani says:
One who walks under Your Name is untouched by fear or anxiety.
Here, Chardi Kala does not mean smiling all the time. It means that even when the heart trembles, the soul does not collapse. It means that tears may fall, but faith does not break. The world may shake, but the mind does not fall apart from within. The One Light becomes the inner shelter, the inner sun, the warmth that never leaves.
Hukam: The Path to Inner Victory
Walk in the Will of the Divine; it is written with your very existence.
Chardi Kala is not stubborn positivity. It is a graceful acceptance. It is the understanding that life does not always follow our plans, yet it always follows Divine Order. When we resist Hukam, the world feels heavy. When we accept Hukam, the soul becomes light. In this acceptance, the mind stops fighting life and starts flowing with it. From this flow, resilience is born. From this resilience, victory arises. The person who stands in Hukam discovers inner sunlight even on cloudy days.
Seeing All as One, Serving All as One
Sunday is a day when many slow down, rest, or pray. In Sikh philosophy, rest does not mean disconnection; it means realignment. The reminder is that the world is not separate from the Divine. Everyone we meet carries the same Light.
From the One Light, all were created. Who then is high or low?
This understanding removes judgment and plants compassion. It transforms comparison into connection, competition into contribution, and ego into humility. When the One Light is seen everywhere, service becomes natural. Helping others becomes worship. Humanity becomes sangat. And this spirit of seva becomes Chardi Kala in action.
Conclusion: The Sun Within
Every sunrise is a reminder of a deeper truth: there is also a sun within us. Gurbani calls us to awaken it. The more we recognize the One Light in all, the more we rise in Chardi Kala. Today, on this Sunday of reflection, let this line settle in the heart like dawn.
May Naam elevate the spirit. May Hukam guide the steps. May goodness flow to all. In this lies inner victory.
